WELCOME TO MOONA PLAINS CHAROLAIS : 2011 BULL SALE 24th AUGUST Moona Plains Charolais Stud was founded on 22/04/04 with the purchase of Cobrabald Fancy V3E (ASHV3E) at the Cobrabald Charolais Stud Classic Female Sale. Breed legend LT Wyoming Wind 4020 PLD was our foundation sire through both AI and ET. The idea to breed Charolais was first thought about when we purchased Moona Plains Station in June 2002 and gained EU accreditation. We felt that Charolais offered a lot to our commercial herd of Angus and Angus/Shorthorn females both through Heterosis(Hybrid Vigour) and marketing diversity. Charolais also offered a complementary breed to our existing Angus bull clients. Both breeds excel in their own specialist fields. Angus have great fertility, maternal and meat quality traits whilst Charolais offer excellent early growth and muscle development. We have applied our tried and trusted selection principles from our Stud Angus operation which began in 1962 to our Charolais breeding. The foundation traits of fertility temperament and structural soundness are the cornerstone of our breeding program. Calving ease and finishing ability are the 2 key areas we are striving to entrench as core ingredients in our breeding program. Mainly polled bulls are being used but we are mindful not to power down the classic Charolais performance characteristics. Fancy V3E offers a great classic female line to blend with modern polled Charolais bulls’. Her grand dam Palgrove Fancy 3 B9D is the dam of Palgrove Murdoch R/F widely regarded as one of the softest proven Charolais bulls’. In July 2004 Kylie and I visited the famous Lindskov Thiel (LT) Ranch in South Dakota USA which proved to be the real catalyst for the direction and development of our breeding program. LT and our connection to them is detailed separately on this web site. The second female added to the stud was Palgrove Estella 39(PKQ55E) a proven 10 year old Donor dam from the Palgrove Golden Opportunity Female Sale on 12/03/05. Estella 39 had breed leading early growth fat cover and fertility EBV’S. Although we lost her after having just one calf her breeding lives on through her Palgrove Valiant daughter Moona plains Estella A1E (MPCA1E).
